Our Mission
Our food allergen database and support concept grew organically from our personal experience as food allergy parents. After we rushed our eight month old baby to the emergency department with her first allergic reaction, we entered into a group that no one wants to join, the food allergy community. To our shock and dismay, we learned that United States food producers are not legally required to document the presence of major allergens in their production facilities. It was so hard to trust a company's practices, thus Martha (like so many other food allergy parents) began reaching out to numerous companies, asking questions about allergen presence, ingredient segregation, and cleaning. She began to navigate the process of finding foods that were safe for our daughter to eat, placed endless calls and emails to companies, and ultimately created a personal online list to document the information. As we collected more and more data, our list grew harder to manage. We wanted to be able to keep our information organized, current and easily accessible. We started to dream of creating an easily searchable database of information on thousands of foods produced in the United States.
Five years later, the idea to share our ongoing data collection came to fruition. Our goal is to enable other food allergy community members to access and benefit from all the work that we have done. The site is meant to be a guide, a starting point, and a means to discover companies who may have food production practices that fit your personal comfort level. We do publish the date that information was last confirmed with each company, however we always recommend that consumers verify the information contained on the site with the company and continue to read every food label, every time. We hope that our site helps to lighten the at times incredibly heavy load that is borne by having food allergies or caring about someone who has them. Our hope and goal is that we will also be able to support programs for funding epinephrine injectors for those in need.
In solidarity,
Martha & Jan
